SENNEKER MAKES IT 2 IN ROW IN 1971 GLASS CITY 200; CONTROVERSY MARKS THE DAY!
In 1968, Toledo Speedway promoter and ARCA founder John Marcum came up with the idea of running a 200 lap Late Model invitational—the Glass City 200. Despite a 20-year hiatus of the race from 1978-1998 (when the Toledo track was sold), the race was revived in 1999 when Marcum’s grandson, Ron Drager, purchased the track with business partner Roy Mott.
And the race still carries the prestige and notoriety that it once did back in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Today, we look at 1971…a great field of cars and a big controversy highlighted the event, but did not keep Bob Senneker from making it 2 wins in a row at the 200…….as he posed with the trophy.
...ENDURO CARS QUALIFYING! DWARFS, 4 CYLINDERS, TRAIN RACE ON AT FLAT ROCK
The winner of the Enduro gets a cool $1000 for the victory. The race features no yellow flags and is only stopped for safety measures. The Enduro-style race dates back to the mid-1980’s at the track and has been a mainstay of Flat Rock’s schedule since.
The touring MCR Dwarf Cars will make their second appearance of 2013 at Flat Rock, while the ARCA 4 Cylinder title is on the line in their 20 lap main event. The wild Figure 8 Train race, which has 2 cars chained together—front car with the engine, back car with the brakes, is also on tap for fans Saturday night. The pit area opens at 3, the front gates open at 4, practice begins at 4, time trials are at 5 and racing starts at 6 p.m. Please note the 6 p.m.start time for this event and the remaining events on the Flat Rock schedule. And at Toledo Speedway this weekend, a Racer's Flea Market and Public Flea Market will take place in the track parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, September 7-8.
The Rusty Wallace Racing Experience is also at the track for rides and drives in a stock car! Reservations are required. Go to www.racewithrusty.com for more information.

...JOE RUTTMAN CLAIMS 1969 GLASS CITY 200
(September 4, 2013): An upstart driver with a strong racing heritage provided the story line for the 1969 Glass City 200, the second year for the race. Joe Ruttman, whose brother, Troy, captured the Indy 500, posted the “upset” win in the 200 lap contest. Driving a car with the number 14 on the doors, Joe took the lead from Kalamazoo, MI driver Jerry Spear on lap 171 when Spear ran out of fuel, giving Ruttman the lead and the eventual win.

(FLAT
ROCK, Michigan - August 31, 2013) - While
Paul Pelletier, Kyle Worley and Danny Gaddis visited the Sun Drop Winner’s
Circle for the first time this season at Flat Rock Speedway, Dennis Strickland,
Grant Hedges, Greg Studt and Rich Abel locked up their respective 2013 track
championships on Heritage Newspapers Season Championship Night. The exciting night was capped off with a
fireworks display.
The 50 lap ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model championship
event saw the first 29 laps run without a yellow flag. Paul Pelletier nosed out in front of pole
sitter Derek Wiley to take control of the race on the start. Paul, running with the #6 on his car to honor
car owner Bob Ward, who passed away recently, stayed in control the entire
distance to grab the win. Dennis
Strickland got by Wiley in the final 12 laps to take second, cementing his
second Flat Rock Late Model title in the process. Ron Allen made a slick move on a restart and
was able to grab third, rookie Frank Jiovani was fourth and Steve Cronenwett
Jr. fifth. Wiley was sixth, followed by
Stan Yee Jr., Eric Lee, Scott Pemberton and Chris Benson. Wiley set fast time at 11:825 for the 21 car
field, with heat wins to Allen, Joe Hawes and Brad Turner. Strickland topped Cronenwett Jr., Pelletier,
Pemberton and Jiovani in the final points.
WENDY’S NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION THRILLS CROWD; ALLEN TAKES WIN, FROLING GRABS TITLE
(Toledo,
Ohio - August 30, 2013) - The
large crowd that ventured to Toledo Speedway Friday for the Wendy’s Hamburgers
“Night of Destruction” got what they came for and more! A wild and entertaining night of action and

ARCA ACME Dismantling Sportsman division championship event.
Representing the Toledo-area and surrounding Wendy’s
franchises, Wendy was busy all night, greeting fans, presenting trophies and
she also sang both the Canadian and our National Anthem!
For the first time, the Sportsman class competed as part
of the Night of Destruction race card.

of the season. A very competitive chase
for the lead saw Ron Allen hold on for the win over Mike Young, Kyle DeLisle Jr.,
Howard Kelley Jr., Jim Froling, Greg Stilwell, Jeff Myers Jr., Chad Stilwell,
Kenny McKay Jr., Dan Grigsby, Norm Lewallen, David Frantz, Kent McCloskey, Andy

HANTZ GRABS 7-UP 125 AT FLAT ROCK
(FLAT
ROCK, MI - August 17, 2013) - Angola,
IN veteran Scott Hantz led only 3 laps, but they were the last 3 as he took the
victory in the 7-Up 125 lap feature for the ARCA/CRA Super Series Late Models
powered by Jeg’s Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway. The race saw an incredible run of 121 laps of
straight green flag racing after a lap 1 yellow flag. NASCAR driver David Stremme signed autographs
and greeted fans at the track.
A 20 car field took the green flag and female star Ali
Kern grabbed the lead. Ali was
impressive out front, working traffic to the high and low side and staying in
the number 1 spot for the initial 40 laps.
The yellow came out after 1 circuit when Kenny Tweedy spun in turn
2. The next 121 laps would run green,
and with traffic and battles for position, the action was exciting all around
the ¼ mile paved oval.
Brian Campbell began to make his run to the front and
eventually caught Kern and zipped into the lead on lap 41, using the high
groove. Campbell stayed up top as he set
a very quick pace. Hantz got caught in
race traffic, which slowed his progress in the early stages of the race. Fast
qualifier and current ARCA/CRA point leader Travis Braden (12:183), steadily
move up through the field from his 8th starting spot. The long stretch of green flag racing saw 4-time Flat Rock champ Eric Lee,
Braden and Hantz stage a great battle for position, while Campbell motored out
front.

JACK GRABS MILLER LITE 100 TOLEDO VICTORY; HANTZ, WHISMAN, O’LEARY SEASON CHAMPS
(TOLEDO, Ohio - August 16, 2013) - Brent Jack scored the victory in the Miller Lite 100 for the ARCA Glass City Gold Cup/Main Event Late Model Series feature Friday night at Toledo Speedway. Scott Hantz, by virtue of his second place run, captured the 2013 Gold Cup championship, while Dennis Whisman and Tommy O’Leary secured the track championships in their respective classes. NASCAR Talladega 500 winner David Ragan greeted fans prior to the beginning of the race card.
The 100 lap Late Model contest with filled with attrition as just 9 cars finished the event. Despite that number, a great battle up front for the lead kept things exciting for a better part of the race. Harold Fair Jr. led the first 4 laps, until Jake Francis grabbed the top spot after a lap 5 restart. Brent Jack had a fuel leak and that sent 6 cars sliding and spinning down the backchute. Jack pitted and rejoined the field. Jake sped away, but a lap 13 red stopped the action when Jeff Ganus had his car catch fire going down the backstretch. Jeff would return to the race late in the event. Scott Hantz, the fast qualifier at 15:008 for the 24 car field, took the point on lap 27 from Francis. On lap 29, Fair darted down pit road with overheating woes.

PHIL BOZELL CAPTURES JOY FAIR MEMORIAL-STAN YEE MEMORIAL 150
(FLAT
ROCK, Michigan - August 10, 2013) - Phil
Bozell, making his first-ever start at Flat Rock Speedway, nosed by Harold Fair
Jr. with 10 laps to go, setting up another incredible finish as 4 cars
resembling a 4 car dash battled to the wire in the Joy Fair Memorial-Stan Yee
Memorial 150, sponsored by Moran Chevrolet and Diamond Racing Products. Bozell had enough to nip Terry
Senneker, Fair Jr. and Dennis Strickland to win the event, which saw the first
83 laps run without a yellow flag.
As was the case in the 2012 edition of this race, which saw Mike Root pass 2 cars on the high side in the closing laps, this story cannot properly describe this 150 lap classic. It’s very simple—ask anyone that witnessed this race, which was leg number 5 of the Glass City Gold Cup Series.
Members of the Fair and Yee family presented the Gold Cups and trophy to Phil in the Sun Drop Winners Circle. A large crowd turned out to fill the Joy Fair Grandstand and witnessed tremendous competition, as 42 cars were on hand for the prestigious race, which has become one of the “can’t miss” Late Model races in the area.
The Fair Memorial, which was originally scheduled for 100
laps, was rained out June 22 and again July 6.
The Yee Memorial fell victim to rain July 27, and with the 2013 schedule
winding down, the 2 Memorial events were reset and combined into 1 race for
Saturday, honoring Joy Fair and Stan Yee Sr.
