CAR OWNER BOB WARD PASSES AWAY

Bob Ward of Romulus, MI passed away last evening after being hospitalized earlier in the week.  Bob was 78 years old.  He was affectionately known as “Grumpy” by all his friends.

A car owner for over 40 years, Bob fielded Late Models for many, many drivers, which carried his # 6.  He was a superb fabricator and worked on race cars out of his shop at his home.  Despite being confined to a wheelchair in the past years, Bob never stopped helping racers and was a fixture at both Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways.

He is survived by his wife, Lela, son Jim and daughters Linda and Elizabeth.  He was preceded in death by another son, Bobby.

Visitation will be held at the Crane Funeral Home, 36885 Goddard Road (734-941-9200) in Romulus on Monday, August 19 from Noon to 8:30 p.m.  Services will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, August 20 at 11 a.m.

WENDY’S NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION THRILLS CROWD; ALLEN TAKES WIN, FROLING GRABS TITLE

(Toledo, Ohio - August 30, 2013) - The large crowd that ventured to Toledo Speedway Friday for the Wendy’s Hamburgers “Night of Destruction” got what they came for and more!  A wild and entertaining night of action and thrills put the exclamation mark on the evening, which included the track’s ARCA ACME Dismantling Sportsman division championship event. 

Representing the Toledo-area and surrounding Wendy’s franchises, Wendy was busy all night, greeting fans, presenting trophies and she also sang both the Canadian and our National Anthem! 

For the first time, the Sportsman class competed as part of the Night of Destruction race card.  Ron Allen captured the 40 lap Championship race, the final point event of the season.  A very competitive chase for the lead saw Ron Allen hold on for the win over Mike Young, Kyle DeLisle Jr., Howard Kelley Jr., Jim Froling, Greg Stilwell, Jeff Myers Jr., Chad Stilwell, Kenny McKay Jr., Dan Grigsby, Norm Lewallen, David Frantz, Kent McCloskey, Andy Harding and Rich Abel.  Froling captured the 2013 track championship, edging out DeLisle Jr., Allen, McKay Jr. and Young for the honor.  Kelley Jr. and Myers Jr. took the heat wins.  DeLisle Jr. set quick time at 17:447.

Toledo, Ohio—September 17, 2013:  Preparations continue as the 25th Anniversary of the Great Lakes Helicopter Glass City 200 nears!   Lap money sponsorship at just $10 per lap will go to the leader of each lap in the 200 lap race.  And, some reserved seat tickets still remain for the season-ending event, set for Saturday, September 28.  The race is being co-sponsored by Francis Engineering, Woodville Auto Finance, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

The lap money sponsorship list will be posted on the track’s webpage.  Sponsors will also get public address mentions during the event and a listing will appear in the track’s special souvenir program for this race.

Reserved seat tickets feature seating in the center grandstand, directly behind the start-finish line.  The seats have backrests attached with additional leg room in the section.

VANDOORN LEADS GLASS CITY 200 FRIDAY PRACTICE TUNE-UP

Perfect weather conditions greeted race teams for a quick 2-hour practice session leading up to tomorrow’s Great Lakes Helicopter Glass City 200 outlaw Late Model race.  Johnny VanDoorn led the 33 cars at the track, clicking off a lap of 14:973. 

The top ten cars in the practice session are VanDoorn, Jeff Ganus, Brian Ross, Johnny Belott, Harold Fair Jr., Jake Francis, Terry Senneker Jr., Brent Jack, Dennis Strickland and Scott Hantz.  All practice times can be viewed by logging onto www.toledospeedway.com.

One of the pre-race favorites, Ross, driving Bob Blount’s #16 has scratched due to engine trouble.

The car #41 entry from Wisconsin has not arrived at the track, while Jimmy Thiel, at the wheel of the late Bob Ward’s #6 encountered engine trouble and has scratched for the weekend.  Steve Cronenwett Jr.’s #88 also had mechanical issues, and the team is going home and loading up another car to compete in the 200. 

The race day schedule has the pit area opening at 9:30 a.m., practice begins at Noon, time trials are set for 3 and racing begins at 5 p.m. The front gates will be open to watch practice during the afternoon; at 2:30, the grandstands will be cleared and tickets will go on sale.

Any remaining reserved seat tickets and all general admission and kids tickets will go on sale when the ticket office opens at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Attention Flat Rock and Toledo Speedway Race Teams

Effective August 1, 2012, the price of Sunoco Racing Fuel at both tracks will be reduced by 50 cents per gallon.  Fuel price will now be $8 per gallon.

The weekly $50 random draw Sunoco/Corrigan Oil bonus at Flat Rock for weekly events and the Sunoco/Bazell Race Fuels weekly $50 random draw for teams that purchase a minimum of 5 gallons of race fuel on those nights remains in effect through Championship Nights at both tracks.

**Effective immediately, used racing tires will no longer be accepted at either track until further notice.

Flat Rock Speedway, 11:50 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2012: The track is dry and we are preparing for tonight's show, featuring the return of the MSA Super Modifieds for the first time in over 30 years.  The Flat Rock Street Stocks, Figure 8's and 4 Cylinders are also in action tonight.

There still is a chance of a shower, but hopefully it won't interfere with our plans. 

Our best advise is to check the website for any further updates or call the track at 734-782-2480 before you hit the road. The quickly-changing weather conditions of this front keep everyone guessing.

Couple weeks of racing in this column.

The races held on August 4. The races got started about a half hour late when a rain storm Under heavy skies, we got all but a few laps of the Figure 8 feature in.

Paul Pelletier and Dennis Strickland again had a great side-by-side battle in the Super Late Model feature. Pelletier took home his fourth win of the season. “The race with Dennis was a good competitive race. We only touched one. I’m going to make this quick so we get more races in before the rain comes. I want to thank my sponsors, Fraza Forklifts, Dusty's Collision, Exotic Automation, First Impressions Cement, ABC Plumbing, Berringer Law, Duane's Roadrunner's and my family and crew and all the fans for sticking it out tonight.”

A reminder to all fans and race teams--Flat Rock Speedway's final race of the season Saturday night, September 15 has a 6 p.m. start time for the Griller's Select BBQ Sauce School Bus Figure 8 races!

Pits open at 3, front gates and ticket office opens at 3:30, practice at 4 and racing at 6 p.m.  There will be no qualifying.  We will draw for position.

In addition to the School Buses, the Figure 8's (feature only), Street Stocks and Michigan Legends will be in action, along with a Boat Figure 8 Race.

Reserved seat tickets ONLY are being sold this week.  ALL reserved seats, regardless of age, are $16 each.  Call the track office at 734-782-2480 to make reservations.  The office will close at 5 p.m. Friday and ticket sales will cease at that time until 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

ALL general admission tickets and children's tickets go on sale at 3:30 p.m. race day!  Adults are $15 general admission, kids 6-12 are $3 and under 6 are free.

TAX FORMS:  The W-9’s are posted under forms.  IF someone other than the driver is to receive the winnings, this form MUST be filled out and sent to the office.

AGE LIMIT FOR DRIVERS:  Beginning with the 2013 season, the minimum age to race at Flat Rock and Toledo will be 14 years old.  ALL drivers younger than 16 will have a set of requirements to meet, which is outlined below:  Personal meeting with ARCA officials; background profile/resume, private on-track test session with observers on hand, restrictive/probationary status for designated period of time.  Please contact the track if you have a driver under the age of 16 that will be competing next season.
