(FLAT ROCK, Michigan - June 27, 2013) - August 14, 1953: Flat Rock Speedway opens the gates for their very first race. Built by Detroit-area businessman Sheldon Hayes Sr. and his associates, the track was the first “rubberized” asphalt track in the nation. POWERFUL STORM WIPES OUT JOY FAIR MEMORIAL 100
Saturday's Diamond Racing Products Joy Fair Memorial 100 at Flat Rock Speedway was cancelled when a powerful thunderstorm ripped through the grounds at 4 p.m.
Rougly 4 to 5 inches of rain fell in less than 90 minutes, flooding the track infield, pit area and parking lot. The deluge was accompanied by high winds that knocked down several large billboards, splintered tree limbs and moved anything not anchored down. Lightning struck the track scoreboard, a transformer on the north edge of the property and in the pit area.
The incredible force of Mother Nature was not a pretty sight as a full pit area took cover when the weather cell took a turn from the south and came directly at the track, then turned again and went directly westward.
A incredible field of 36 Late Models were at the track for the event. The Diamond Racing Products Joy Fair Memorial 100 will now become part of the track's 60th Anniversary show Saturday, July 6.
More details will follow soon.
...33 LATE MODELS AT FLAT ROCK! JOY FAIR MEMORIAL 100 TONIGHT!
A total of 33 ARCA Glass City Gold Cup Late Models are in the pits and now practicing for tonight's Diamond Racing Products Joy Fair Memorial 100 at Flat Rock Speedway! A couple more cars are still expected as the track prepares to honor the memory of the legendary Fair, who passed away in December of 2011.
It's an impressive list, and add to it the late entries of Terry Senneker, Brent Jack, Jimmy Thiel, Don St. Denis and Brian Clay!
In addition to the Moran Chevrolet Late Models, the Parts Galore Figure 8's and DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks will also compete tonight.
It's warm and dry--join us for what looks to be a great night of racing at "The Rock".

Re: Toledo Late Model tires
On Wednesday, June 5, Hoosier Tire conducted a tire test at Toledo Speedway for the ARCA Late Models. Irish Saunders, Asphalt Product Manager for Hoosier, conducted the test. Ken Kolter, lead engineer and his staff were also present at the test.
The cars of JR Roahrig, #16, John VanDoorn, #61, and Dennis Strickland, #90, took part in the day-long test session.
3 combinations of tires were tested:
F45/Star 56
3035/3045
F40/F50
After reviewing all test data, Hoosier has determined that the F40 left side and F50 right side tires are the proper tire for Toledo Speedway Late Models at this current time.
“The Hoosier F40/F50 combination is a proven tire and the best fit for Toledo,” said Saunders. “The tire will be consistent and durable.”
Tires will be available at both the ARCA office and Toledo Speedway Monday, July 1.
*An open test is being planned for Friday, July 5. There will be no pit pass fees for Late Model teams. The plan is to open at 3:30, the Late Models will have the track from 4:30-5:15 and from 6:45-7:15. We are running our weekly show that night also. *We plan to have some used F40/F50 tires here at the track for use on July 5 that will be available at no charge.
*Teams planning to test July 5 must contact Scott or Casey at Toledo at 419-727-1100 prior to the test.
Thank you,
Ron Drager
