Toledo Speedway Remembers Gordon Johncock

TOLEDO, OH — Toledo Speedway remembers Gordon Johncock, the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner who passed away September 28 at age 90.

Before becoming one of Indy car racing's biggest stars, Johncock competed regularly at Toledo Speedway during the track's early years. Johncock raced in the Super Modified division, including a feature victory at the track in 1963.

Johncock went on to win the 1973 and 1982 Indianapolis 500s, with his 1982 victory coming in a then-record 0.16-second finish over Rick Mears. He also won the 1976 USAC National Championship and 25 Indy car races during his career.

From Toledo's early Super Modified days to Victory Lane at Indianapolis, Johncock left an enduring mark on American racing.

Toledo Speedway extends its condolences to the Johncock family and remembers one of Michigan's great racing legends.
