Bret Holmes Building Speed and a Degree while Chasing 2020 ARCA Menards Series Title

Most college students have their hands full maintaining a full course load. Most business owners, similarly, have a hard time finding time to handle every facet of keeping their company up and running. Very few can be a successful student and have their hand in running a successful company.

Oh, add in chasing an ARCA Menards Series championship.

Enter Auburn University student Bret Holmes.

Holmes is a building sciences major at Auburn, where he is on track to graduate in December. In addition, he works side-by-side with his father, Stacy, in the family’s construction company, Holmes II Excavation. And as he has done since 2018, Holmes is again racing full-time in the ARCA Menards Series.

On the hunt for his first championship, Holmes and his team, led by former driver Shane Huffman, have stepped it up a notch in 2020. Following the return to racing, Holmes reeled off eleven straight top 10s – including five consecutive top-five along with his breakthrough victory at Kansas.

Holmes nearly scored his second victory of the season last Saturday night at Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri. Holmes earned his first General Tire Pole Award early in the day and led the first 69 laps before getting tagged from behind and spun in turn one. Holmes recovered and maintained his composure, steadily working his way through the field before finishing second, his best career short track finish.

“This is our new short track car,” Holmes said after the race. “We raced at earlier in the season at Toledo and it ran really good. I think we have it figured out. It’s disappointing we were raced the way we were, but the car is in one piece. It’s hard to win one of these short track races. We’ve got a great chance to get it done at Toledo.”

Holmes will be looking for his second win of the 2020 season in the Royal Truck & Trailer 200 at Toledo Speedway (MAVTV, Live, 5 pm ET).
