Outlaws on the Way!; Miller Lite Glass City 200 at Toledo Speedway This Weekend; Field Stacked

TOLEDO, OH (9-18-08) - With a weekend off from the ARCA RE/MAX Series world, many series officials are going racing anyway. And they're steering for Toledo Speedway this Friday and Saturday where the 20th Miller Lite Glass City 200 takes center stage on the half-mile Toledo oval.

Current Entry List

Series officials aren't the only ones headed out to the renowned late model classic. The field will also hold a good bit of ARCA RE/MAX Series flavor - most notably, an entry from three-time RE/MAX Series winner and former Toledo late model track champion Brian Keselowski.

Also entered from the RE/MAX Series ranks are Leroy, Ohio's Jake Francis and veteran Roger Blackstock. Although Blackstock hasn't raced on the RE/MAX Series tour since 2001, the Shelby Township, Michigan racer has 179 career RE/MAX Series starts from 1984 through 2001.

The RE/MAX Series vets will be up against some serious competition with Glass City 200 veterans Steve Sauve and Brian Campbell entered. Sauve is a three-time Glass City 200 winner and Campbell is the defending race winner. Campbell is the son of late model veteran/10-time Berlin Raceway track champion Freddie Campbell. The elder Campbell also has ties to ARCA having won the RE/MAX Series race at Berlin in 2002. sauvegc200.jpg

Sauve's Glass City 200 victories came in consecutive years-2002, 2003 and 2004. A fourth victory would place the Saginaw, Michigan veteran in a class by himself as the only four-time winner of the event. He is currently tied with late model legend and three-time Glass City 200 winner Bob Senneker, who posted wins in 1970, 1971 and 1977.

Harold Fair, Sr., who is also a veteran of the RE/MAX Series, is also entered, as is his son Harold Fair, Jr. Fair, Sr. made big headlines earlier this year at Toledo when the 62-year-old Milan, Michigan stock car legend won a Gold Cup 100-lapper. Fair Jr. is a former Toledo Late Model Gold Cup champion and has already been crowned 2008 Toledo Speedway late model track champion.

2005 Glass City winner John Doering has also filed an entry. Doering will be at the wheel of the Dean Hudson-prepared no. 5, owned by Indiana's Larry Zent, the combination that led him to victory lane in '05.

With the entry list dotted with former Glass City winners, it's also filled with a greater percentage of players who have long sought the Glass City crown without a victory in the prestigious event, including veteran Dave Kuhlman. Kuhlman has won nearly every major-league outlaw late model event in the region except for the Glass City 200. Kuhlman, a former Iceman champion, also has earned several track championship at Flat Rock Speedway as well as Toledo. Still yet, with all his credentials, the Glass City crown continues to elude the Howell, Michigan favorite.

This year's event has been scaled back to 150 laps, with $5500 to win and $1000 to start being posted for the Late Model portion of the event.

The ARCA Sportsman division will also compete in a 35 lap contest, with a 15 lap Factory Stock Figure 8 race also on tap, giving fans 200 laps of racing. A purse of over $55,000 has been posted for the evening with $5,500 going to the Glass City 200 winner and $1,000 to each and every driver who starts the race.

Ticket prices and pit passes have been rolled back $5 each for the 2008 edition of the event. The race will see a 20-minute break at lap 76.

Joy Fair was the winner of the very first Glass City in 1968; other winners include Joe Ruttman (1969, 1973); Bob Senneker (1970, 1971, 1977); Danny Byrd (1972); the late John Anderson (1974); the late Jim Bickerstaff (1975); Ed Cooper (1976); Tim Felver (1999); Tim Ice (2000); Jr. Hanley (2001); Steve Sauve (2002, 2003, 2004); John Doering Jr. (2005); Jack Landis (2006) and Brian Campbell (2007).

In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Glass City race, track historians Jim Hehl, Brian Norton and several members of the track staff are compiling a special edition souvenir program.  The booklet will contain photos and short recaps of each of the 19 previous Glass City events held at Toledo, which began in 1968 and ran through 1977; the race was revived in 1999 when current ARCA President and Toledo co-promoter Ron Drager and his business partner, Roy Mott, purchased Toledo.

The Victory Lane Motorsports Racing Experience, which will be conducting rides and drives at Toledo Sunday afternoon, September 21, will have several of their Nextel Cup Series race cars on display at the track Saturday night.

An optional open practice will be held Friday evening, September 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Friday's timetable has the pits open at 1, with rig parking, tire sales and some tech taking place before the practice session.

Saturday the pits will open at 9:30 a.m., practice begins at noon, time trials are set for 3 p.m. and racing starts at 5 p.m.  A rain date of Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m. has been established, if needed.
