Sauve Shoots For Unprecedented 4th Glass City Title; Defending Champ Campbell Enters

TOLEDO, OH  (9-17-2008)--  3-time race winner Steve Sauve of Saginaw, MI and defending champ Brian Campbell are the latest entries for the 20th Anniversary of the Miller Lite Glass City 200, set for this Saturday, September 20 at Toledo Speedway.  This year’s event has been scaled back to 150 laps, with $5500 to win and $1000 to start being posted for the Late Model portion of the event.

The ARCA Sportsman will compete in a 35 lap contest, with a 15 lap Factory Stock Figure 8 race also on tap, giving fans 200 laps of racing.  A purse of over $55,000 has been posted for the evening.

Ticket prices and pit passes have been rolled back $5 each for the 2008 edition of the event.  The race will see a 20-minute break at lap 76.

sauvegcvl04.jpgSauve has accomplished perhaps one of the most incredible feats in Late Model short track racing by capturing the prestigious Glass City event not only 3 times, but in consecutive years—2002, 2003 and 2004.  Steve has challenged for the win and has led the race in past 3 seasons, but is still seeking that elusive 4th win, which would put him alone in Glass City victories.  He is currently tied with legend Bob Senneker, who posted wins in 1970, 1971 and 1977.

Campbell has added his name to the entry list.  The second-generation driver was nearly flawless as he recorded the win in the 2007 Glass City event, his first at Toledo and his first time in an outlaw Late Model at the ½ mile paved oval.

Joy Fair was the winner of the very first Glass City in 1968; other winners include Joe Ruttman (1969, 1973); Bob Senneker (1970, 1971, 1977); Danny Byrd (1972); the late John Anderson (1974); the late Jim Bickerstaff (1975); Ed Cooper (1976); Tim Felver (1999); Tim Ice (2000); Jr. Hanley (2001); Steve Sauve (2002, 2003, 2004); John Doering Jr. (2005); Jack Landis (2006) and Brian Campbell (2007).

In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Glass City race, track historians Jim Hehl, Brian Norton and several members of the track staff are compiling a special edition souvenir program.  The booklet will contain photos and short recaps of each of the 19 previous Glass City events held at Toledo, which began in 1968 and ran through 1977; the race was revived in 1999 when current ARCA President and Toledo co-promoter Ron Drager and his business partner, Roy Mott, purchased Toledo.

The Victory Lane Motorsports Racing Experience, which will be conducting rides and drives at Toledo Sunday afternoon, September 21, will have several of their Nextel Cup Series race cars on display at the track Saturday night.

An optional open practice will be held Friday evening, September 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Friday’s timetable has the pits open at 1, with rig parking, tire sales and some tech taking place before the practice session.

Saturday the pits will open at 9:30 a.m., practice begins at noon, time trials are set for 3 p.m. and racing starts at 5 p.m.  A rain date of Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m. has been established, if needed.

Additional sponsors for the Miller Lite Glass City 200 include LV Alliance, All Star Performance, Allegiant Air, Holley Carbs, Aero Wheels, Earl’s Fittings, Royal Truck and Trailer Sales, Bazell Race Fuels, Burge Wrecking, Penske Racing Shocks, Port City Racecars, DTS Drive Train Specialists, Sunoco and R & M Recycling.
