Toledo Action Beats the Rain--Almost

TOLEDO, OH (5-30-2008)-- Despite threatening weather looming in the distance and the usual lousy forecast, Toledo Speedway was able to complete all but 1 race on Armed Forces Appreciation Night. The Friday night show was completed with the exception of the 10 lap Factory Stock B Main. Howard Kelley Jr., Jeremy Vanderhoof and Cory McCaughey posted feature wins before the rains hit the track.

The 35 lap ARCA National City Bank Sportsman main event was marred with 2 red flags. Scott Bross led the first lap, with Kelley Jr. nosing into the lead on lap 2. The initial red slowed things on lap 16 when Chad Stilwell had the engine let go. A quick clean-up by the track crew got things moving but came out again on lap 18 when Ron Allen and Jim Froling got together, sending Froling into the frontstretch wall. Allen took the blame, went to the tail and the race resumed. A good battle up front saw Kelley Jr., Chad Guinn and Allen, from the back, run nose to tail as the laps wore on. By lap 28, Ron had caught the lead duo, got by Guinnhoward_kelley_jr.jpg and went to work on Howard. Kelley was up to the task as he picked up the win over Allen, Guinn, Jarod MacZink, Brian Pelkey, Jeff King, Scott Bross, Greg Stilwell, Scott Lockenour and Garrick Gray. Froling and MacZink took the heat wins, with Froling setting quick time 17:546.

Win number 2 of the season came to Cory McCaughey in the 20 lap ARCA A-1 Auto Parts Factory Stock feature contest. Mike Mills led the first 9 laps until Eric Huston tangled with the leader. That gave McCaughey the point and he held on as he kept back Dave Arnold Jr. for the win. The race ended 1 lap short of 20 when the rains set in. Rick cory_mccaughey.jpgCousino was third, AJ Padgett fourth and Landon Schuster fifth, followed by Gary Cronenwett, Josh Bunting, Brian Ringger, Rick Cousino Jr. and Mike Hassen. Huston, Jesse Carillo and Craig Osenbaugh captured the heat wins. Randy Padgett took the last-chance race. The B Main will be contested next Friday, June 6. 11.951 was fast time for Arnold Jr. as he topped the 24 car field.

Second-generation driver Jeremy Vanderhoof also made it win number 2 for the season, holding back Dennis Whisman for the win in the 20 lap ARCA Speedway Bar and Grille Figure 8 feature. Randy Roberts led the initial 4 circuits until Vanderhoof dipped low and got by Roberts and Whisman in one move. Jeremy stayed out front for the win over Whisman, Robbie Loving, Roberts, Anthony Terris, Chuck Pankow, Scott Apperson and Brice Thomsen. Whisman was the heat race winner.

A big Friday night of action is set for June 6 with the Kids Night promotion. All kids to age 14 will be admitted FREE and will also receive a free hot dog, bag of chips and a soft drink. Roadway Express, Utility Trailer Sales and Teamsters Local 20 will sponsor the night of racing. The Kids Night promotion is sponsored by 7-Up/Cadbury Bottling, Seyfert’s Snacks and Sherwood Foods.
