FLAT ROCK PREPARES FOR 60TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW AND FIREWORKS; BIGGEST SHOW OF YEAR JULY 6—6:30 P.M. ST

(FLAT ROCK, Michigan - June 27, 2013) - August 14, 1953:  Flat Rock Speedway opens the gates for their very first race.  Built by Detroit-area businessman Sheldon Hayes Sr. and his associates, the track was the first “rubberized” asphalt track in the nation.  Hayes, a pavement company owner, mixed up a special batch of asphalt for the ¼ mile paved oval…..and now, 60 years later, Flat Rock Speedway will celebrate the anniversary with the biggest show on its 2013 calendar.

Over 200 laps of feature racing and the fabulous Flat Rock Speedway Fireworks display that will conclude the great evening of family fun and entertainment is on tap for Saturday evening, July 6.  A special start time of 6:30 p.m. has been set for the event.

The original schedule for the race was three-60 lap features.  With the big Late Model race of June 22 washed out by a storm, the Late Model event now will become a 100 lap contest, making the July 6 Anniversary show just that much bigger and better!

The Moran Chevrolet Late Models will now battle in the Diamond Racing Products Joy Fair Memorial 100 July 6.  It is a fitting tribute that the race named in the honor of Fair, the track’s all-time win leader, will now be held on this special occasion.  In addition to the ARCA Glass City Gold Cup Late Models, the Parts Galore Figure 8’s and the DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks will each compete in 60 lap feature events.  The Figure 8 race will be sponsored by A & M Transmission, which is located across the street from the speedway.

Associate sponsors for the race include Jack Bush and Sons Grading, First Care Ambulance, Glass Unlimited and Sterling Printing and Graphics.  To become a sponsor for the 60th Anniversary show, please call 419-727-1100.  Lap money is also available at $5 per lap for the Figure 8 and Street Stock races.  The Late Model lap money is sold out.

Fair is considered as one of the legendary drivers in the history of short track racing, amassing over 800 wins in a career that spanned 6 decades.  Joy is the all-time win leader at Flat Rock with 159 victories and 10 track championships, and his record at Toledo, Flat Rock’s sister track, is nearly as impressive.  The driver of the school-bus yellow number 1 captured 97 Toledo wins and netted 7 track titles, not to mention hundreds of wins and more championships at tracks in several states and Canada during his illustrious career.

Flat Rock unveiled the naming of the Joy Fair Grandstand late last season. Members of Joy’s family will attend the event and take part in pre- and post-race ceremonies to honor his memory.  Fair passed away in December of 2011 at the age of 81.

All seating for this race will be general admission.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.flatrockspeedway.com.  Tickets will go on sale race day at the track at 2:30 p.m. when the front gates open.  The pit area will open at 1, practice begins at 2:30, time trials are set for 4:30 and racing begins at the special time of 6:30 p.m. for this race.
