Hantz sails to Winner's Circle at Toledo in ARCA Glass City Gold Cup Hollywood Casino 100

Hantz sails to Winner's Circle at Toledo in ARCA Glass City Gold Cup Hollywood Casino 100

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - It doesn't matter much which type of car he gets in, Angola, Indiana's Scott Hantz will sooner or later find his way to Victory Lane.

Such was the case again Friday night at Toledo Speedway where the three-time ARCA CRA Super Series champion hopped in his ARCA Glass City Gold Cup Outlaw Late Model car and sailed into the Sun Drop Winner's Circle in the Hollywood Casino 100, the first of six events for the Gold Cup outlaw tour in 2013. Scott Altman, representing Hollywood Casino, presented the Cup to Hantz in the winner's circle.

The event was delayed for a late afternoon shower that covered the half-mile oval, but ARCA series officials stayed with the program, and had the track dry in 75 minutes.

Hantz ultimately capitalized on the misfortunes of Steve Needles, whose car went up in smoke on lap 62 of the 100-lap race, much the same way it did just four laps from the end of last year's Glass City 200 while leading. From there, Hantz held on through lapped traffic to score yet another win, one of several outlaw late model victories for Hantz over the years at Toledo.

Former track champ and Canadian Don St. Denis made his return to Toledo eventful, leading early on, before Steve Needles took control on lap 15.

Recent 7-UP 150 winner Johnny VanDoorn also made things exciting, setting quick time in qualifying (15.014 seconds) around the half-mile, and charging through the field from the 10th starting position by way of a 10-car inversion. The Coopersville, Michigan driver weaved his way to the front, dipped low and got by Harold Fair, Jr. for second, and then tried to squeeze under Needles in turn three, only to spin and bring out the second yellow flag. VanDoorn ducked down pit lane, as did several others, including front runner Brent Jack, the second fastest qualifier. When the race resumed, Needles put some distance between he and Fair, while Hantz began to move up, getting by Fair Jr. for second on lap 39. At halfway, Needles led with Hantz, Fair, Jack and Tim Felver, the 1999 Glass City 200 winner, trailing.

Following Needles departure, Jack poured the coals to it late in the race and whittled away at Hantz's lead, but ran out of laps chasing down the eventual winner. Jack finished second, ahead of Jake Francis in third. Defending Gold Cup champ Dakota Carlson finished fourth with Fair finishing fifth. Felver, Mike Root, St. Denis, Dave Stehouwer and Nick Bailey completed the top-10 finishers, respectively. The Gold Cup tour returns to Toledo July 12.

Rookie Joe Corson brought out the first yellow on lap 32, putting the field into the double-file restart formation.

Make it two for two for Jim Froling in ARCA ACME Dismantling Sportsman events at Toledo so far this season. The 35 lap contest was cruising along with defending track champ Ron Allen in command, followed by Mike Young and Froling within striking distance. A lap 29 yellow set up a double-file restart. Allen and Young made contact coming down to the green, causing Allen to spin turn one. Both cars went to the tail of the field, giving Froling the point. On that re-start, Dan Grigsby got sideways coming off of turn four, collecting several cars including Young, who tagged the wall hard. All drivers were ok. Froling powered the #46 to the win over Norm Lewallen, 14-year old rookie JJ Haley (in his first Toledo start), Kenny McKay Jr. and Allen. Kent McCloskey, Andy Harding, David Frantz, 16 year-old rookie Amber Slagle (also her first Toledo start) and Young rounded out the top 10. Kyle DeLisle posted the fast time at 17:196, but had mechanical woes in the feature.

Greg Studt was the winner in the 25 lap ARCA X Car feature race on the short track. Tom O'Leary IV was the early leader but received a speeding ticket, ending his run. Studt, the fast qualifier at 11:576, took control of the race and raced to the win. Archie Padgett collected second spot, Rich Frantz was third, Jeff King fourth and Rick Cousino fifth, followed by Brian Ringger, rookie Kevin Huston, Randy Padgett Jr., O'Leary IV and Matt Ringger.

There is no racing scheduled for Friday, May 17 as the speedway prepares for the Menards 200 presented by Federated Car Care for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19. The superspeedway-style cars will make their one and only stop in the Glass City for this event, led by series point leader and nine-time ARCA champ Frank Kimmel. Kimmel won at Talladega Superspeedway back on May 3. NASCAR driver and Toledo ARCA winner Ken Schrader is also entered for the 200 lap contest.

The event starts off with Toledo Blade Day on Saturday which includes practice and qualifying for the ARCA cars and the Grogan's Towne 50 lap ARCA Truck Series race. Practice begins at 11 a.m. and racing starts at 3.

Race day is Sunday, May 19, with the on-track driver autograph session set for Noon, followed by pre-race ceremonies and driver introductions. The green flag is set for 2:00 p.m. There'll be lots of fan fest activities in the track parking lot both days, and The Truth Band will entertain race fans in pre-race festivities.
