VANDOORN ENTERS SUNDAY’S TOLEDO EVENT; POLICE, FIRE, MILITARY TO BE HONORED

(TOLEDO, Ohio - September 6, 2011) - Coopersville, MI resident Johnny VanDoorn has filed his entry for Sunday’s special event at Toledo Speedway, the Earsmart Stars and Stripes 100 presented by the Toledo Blade and Cumulus Radio.  The Toledo Police Patrolmen’s Association and the Toledo Fire Department are conducting a pre-race ticket sale for the Sunday, September 11 event.  The pre-sale will serve as a fundraiser, with 50% of the pre-race sale proceeds to be donated to the 2 groups.

A pre-race ceremony is being planned for the event, featuring vintage police and fire vehicles, as well as a color guard and a large American flag.  The track’s R & M Recycling Street Stocks will also be in action with its Season Championship event, with a 50 lap ARCA Truck Series feature also on the September 11 race card.

VanDoorn is one of the rising stars on the stock car circles in the Midwest.  Johnny captured the 2009 and 2010 CRA Super Series Late Model crowns and is a frequent competitor in the outlaw Late Model events around his home state.  He has 1 outlaw Late Model feature win to his credit at the ½ mile paved Glass City oval.

The 100 lap race is the final event in the 5-race ARCA Allegiant Glass City Gold Cup Late Model Series and will serve as a tune-up for the upcoming 23rd running of the Great Lakes Helicopters Glass City 200, set for Saturday, October 1. 

Current point leader Dennis Strickland leads 2-time defending Gold Cup champ Mike Root going into Sunday’s contest.  August Toledo winner Scott Hantz are both entered, as is Harold Fair Jr., the 2007-2008 Gold Cup champion.  Derek Wiley, Joe Hawes, Rick Sheppard, Derrick Sheppard, Nick Grodi, Steve Cronenwett Jr., Todd Perkins, Ricky Kargel, Chad Guinn, Scot Bunge, Keith Nelson, Michael Simko and Ron Allen are also entered.  Butler, IN native Brent Jack, Grand Rapids, MI area drivers Dakota Carlson and Barry Hartwell, along with Jack Varney Jr. are also pre-entered for the final 100 lap contest prior to the Glass City 200.  A total of 22 drivers are entered, with several more still expected.

Pre-sale tickets may be obtained at the following locations; The Toledo Police Museum, 2201 Kenwood Blvd. at Ottawa Park; the Toledo Firefighters Museum, 918 W. Sylvania Avenue; Toledo Firefighters Credit Union, 2275 W. Laskey; the Police Credit Union and Safety Building, 525 N. Erie Street; in downtown Toledo and at the 4280 N. Heatherdowns at Eastgate location.

The speedway, located on Benore Road at the I-75/Alexis Road exit, will also extend an invitation to all current and retired City of Toledo police and firefighters, as well as all military personnel to be their guests for the September 11 race, which falls on the 10th anniversary of 9-11.  Proper service ID is required.

The spectator gates will open and practice begins for the race cars at 11 a.m., time trials are set for 12:30, the pre-race ceremony will take place at 1:45 p.m. and racing gets the green flag at 2 p.m.
