GUINN SAILS TO SUN DROP 100 WIN AT FLAT ROCK

GUINN SAILS TO SUN DROP 100 WIN AT FLAT ROCK

(FLAT ROCK, Michigan - July 16, 2011) - Veteran Chad Guinn turned in a dominating performance and captured the Sun Drop 100 for the ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway.  Guinn wheeled car owner Bill Meade’s #86 to a convincing win and a $1000 payday in record time for the 100 lap contest, which took just 28 minutes and 40 seconds to complete.  The track also staged its annual Christmas in July prize giveaway, with Santa Claus himself presenting presents to lucky race fans.

7-16_fr_ss_86.jpgA total of 40 cars were in the pits for the contest.  Frank Jiovani set the Fastime Racing Engines and Parts quick time at 13:361, while Matt Bunting led the B Main field at 14:117.  With the inversion at 13 cars, the race began with Grant Hedges and Kyle Worley bringing the field to the green flag.  The 2 youngsters exchanged the lead back and forth for the first 3 laps, with Worley nosing out front and then pulling away.  Worley built up a sizable lead while the 23 car field diced for position.  Kyle stayed on the point but his lead was evaporating lap after lap.  On lap 36 Landon Schuster darted under Kyle and took control of the event.  Guinn, working his way from the 10th starting spot, began to move up and grabbed the lead at lap 45.  A yellow at lap 50, the second and last one of the night, allowed Chad to motor away from his competition, moving in and out of traffic and building a big lead.  Arnold Kirsch and Jarod MacZink staged a battle for a top five spot for much of the contest, going 3 wide at times to hold position.  Guinn’s machine began to trail a slight wisp of smoke at lap 75, but Chad’s car appeared to still be strong.  Scot Bunge was charging hard much of the race and came from his 14th starting position to 3rd spot with 20 laps to go.  Guinn worked traffic smoothly to notch the victory, with Schuster second.  Going down the back chute on the final lap, Bunge looped his car while in third spot, allowing the field to gain position.  Tim Moore’s late charge to the top five and Bunge’s spin allowed the current point leader to finish third, MacZink was fourth and Kirsch fifth.  Jiovani, Rob Moore, Danny Slater, Bunge and Rich Frantz completed the top ten.  The first 9 cars were on the lead lap of the 100 lap event.

7-16_fr_ss_b_main_137.jpgJim Selmi led all 30 laps en-route to the victory in the 30 lap DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock B Main contest.  The 70-something veteran was up to the task as he stayed in control the entire distance, which saw just 6 of 16 cars finish the event.  Most of the non-finishers were victims of accidents that collected their cars, with no room to miss the incidents.  Chris Fitzpatrick challenged the leader early in the event, but a flat tire ended his night.  Selmi was trailed at the finish by Jimmy Little, Jimmy Rae, Steve Searles, Tony Camilli, Don Roberts, Paul Falkenburg, Rich Abel, Anthony Camilli and Mark Lavoie.  Heat race winners were Falkenburg, Rae, Schuster, Slater and Chris Diovardi, who captured his first A Main heat victory.

7-16_fr_f8_33.jpgIt was all Greg Studt in the 20 lap ARCA Parts Galore Figure 8 contest as the second-generation driver and former track champ wheeled his way to the win.  Greg got the jump at the start and kept a good cushion the entire way.  A great 3-way battle for second between Robbie Loving, Billy Earley and Jeremy Vanderhoof the entire distance allowed Studt to pull away and maintain his advantage to the checkered flag.  Greg made some evasive moves at the intersection on several laps to avoid a crash, much to the delight of the fans.  Loving held on for second, Earley third and Vanderhoof fourth, with Anthony Terris fifth, followed by Dennis Whisman, Jimmy Rae, Chuck Pankow, Sam Hall and Dan Apperson.  Vanderhoof set fast time at 20:603, while Whisman and Apperson took the heat wins.

Saturday, July 23 is Glass Unlimited Night at Flat Rock Speedway.  The ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Models return to action at “The Rock”, and will be joined by the Parts Galore Figure 8’s and DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks in a full race card for each class.  This will be the final tune-up for the Late Models prior to the track’s biggest race of the season, the Moran Chevrolet/Stan Yee Memorial 150 presented by CGS Imaging.  That race is set for Saturday, July 30.

The front gates will open at 3:30, time trials are at 5 and racing begins at 7 p.m.  For more information on the big race and all track information, log onto www.flatrockspeedway.com.
