Bonus Awards Posted For Flat Rock’s Stan Yee Memorial

(FLAT ROCK, Michigan - July 15, 2011) - Several bonus awards have been added for the running of the Moran Chevrolet/Stan Yee Memorial 150 presented by CGS Imaging, set for Saturday, July 30 at Flat Rock Speedway.  The 150 lap contest for the ARCA Allegiant Glass City Gold Cup Late Models is leg number 3 of the 5 race series between Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways.

Going back to the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, it was common practice for racers to travel to different tracks to compete, especially in the Midwest.  With that in mind, former ARCA official Jack Wyman has posted a total of $500 to be split among the four drivers that travel from the greatest distance to compete in the 150.  Wyman was the pit registrar for over 30 years at both tracks, and was quite familiar with many racers and crewmen, including the late Stan Yee.  Each of the 4 drivers will collect a $125 bonus for making the trip to Flat Rock, and must be pre-registered to collect the bonus.

Lap money is also being posted for the Moran Chevrolet/Stan Yee Memorial 150 presented by CGS Imaging.

The leader of each lap of the 150 lap contest will also receive an additional $5 per lap, with sponsorship coming from businesses and race fans.  To sponsor a lap, call the track office at 734-782-2480.  Flagstar Bank of Dearborn Heights (7 laps), Confetti’s Liquor Box Lounge of Dearborn Heights (7 laps) and race fan Robert Wheaton (5 laps) are the first sponsors to pledge their support.

The event will pay $2533 to win and $533 to start, with drivers from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Canada expected. The track’s Parts Galore Figure 8 and DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock classes will also be in competition, with feature events only for the July 30 race date.

An open practice is scheduled for Wednesday, July 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for race cars of all types. The pit area will open at 4 p.m.

Yee, a hugely successful car owner for over 40 years, passed away May 18, 2008, just 2 days shy of his 76th birthday. Stan’s son, Stan Jr., competes in the Moran Chevrolet Late Model class at Flat Rock. Stan Sr. and his drivers captured numerous titles and big race wins, but his greatest accomplishment may well have been mentoring Stan Jr. to the 2003 Flat Rock Speedway Late Model championship.

Stan Yee was a fixture in Midwest Late Model racing from the 1960s forward. Both on dirt and the asphalt, Stan’s famed No. 33 cars won countless races. Drivers such as Marv Parenteau, Joe Ruttman, Artie Sommers, Joy Fair, the late John Anderson, Rick Sheppard, Danny Byrd, Harold Cook, Chuck Roumell, Steve Lee, and Stan’s son, Stan Jr., piloted Yee’s Collision machines.

The 2011 event marks the fourth year for the Memorial race at Flat Rock. Justin Schroeder scored his first-ever Flat Rock and Late Model win in 2008, first-time Flat Rock visitor Mike Luberda Jr. captured the title in 2009, and Mike Root was victorious in the 2010 version of the race, also his first win at “The Rock”.

The pit area will open at 1:30 p.m. on July 30, with practice for the Late Models set to begin at 3.  Time trials begin at 5 and racing starts at 7 p.m.  Log on to www.flatrockspeedway.com for the entry form and additional information.
