Strickland Shoots For Toledo Allegiant Gold Cup Win July 8

(TOLEDO, Ohio - June 30, 2011) - The ARCA Allegiant Glass City Gold Cup Late Model Series moves to Toledo Speedway Friday night, July 8 for round number 2 of the 5 race series.  Race #1 winner Dennis Strickland will be gunning to duplicate his victory at Flat Rock Speedway June 25.  The 100 lap event for the ARCA Late Models is expected to draw cars from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, with $2000 awaiting the winner.

Strickland edged Eric Lee for the Flat Rock win, giving him 3 wins at “The Rock” this season in his new Port City Racecars chassis.  The July 8 Toledo contest marks the return of the Late Models to the rocket-fast Glass City ½ mile paved oval for the first of 4 events in 2011.

Defending Gold Cup champion Mike Root will be looking for his first-ever Toledo victory.  Root has scored numerous wins at a variety of tracks across Michigan, Ohio and Indiana in the past 2 seasons, but the Toledo win has been elusive for the Grand Rapids, MI driver.  Root was involved in an accident last Saturday at Flat Rock, putting him in tough spot to defend his crown.  4th place Flat Rock finisher Harold Fair Jr. of Milan, MI will also be at Toledo. Fair Jr. captured the Gold Cup championship in 2007 and 2008.

Additional early Toledo entries include Dakota Carlson of Cedar Springs, MI, Steve Cronenwett Jr. of Livonia, MI, rookies Todd Perkins of Toledo and Derek Wiley of Belleville, MI, Oak Harbor, OH driver Nick Grodi, Jack Varney Jr. of Mt. Morris, MI, Joe Hawes of Brownstown, MI and Brent Jack of Butler, IN.

The Allegiant Air Gold Cup Series consists of 5 races, 2 at Flat Rock and 3 at Toledo Speedway for the 2011 season.  The Series moves back to Flat Rock Saturday, July 30 for the prestigious Moran Chevrolet/Stan Yee Memorial 150 presented by CGS Imaging Saturday, July 30, and then back down I-75 to Toledo for a Friday, August 12 contest of 100 laps on the ½ mile paved oval.  The championship event will be held Sunday afternoon, September 11 at Toledo, and will include a tribute to the 10th anniversary of 911.  More details will be announced at a later date regarding this event.

The pit gates will open at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 8, practice begins at 4:30, time trials are at 6:15 and racing begins at 7:30 p.m.

The top 3 drivers in the final points will receive a pair of round-trip tickets from Toledo to Florida, courtesy of Allegiant.  A total of three (3) provisional starting positions are also reserved from the final points for the 23rd running of the Great Lakes Helicopters Glass City 200, set for Saturday, October 1.

The entry form may also be downloaded from the track’s websites.  Go to “Forms” to locate the entry blank.  The entry lists will be posted as entries arrive at the track offices.  Log onto www.flatrockspeedway.com or www.toledospeedway.com for the current entry list and further information.
