Flat Rock Beats Rain; Kargel Conquers

Flat Rock Beats Rain; Kargel Conquers
(FLAT ROCK, Mich. - May 22, 2010) - Mother Nature finally relented on the rain-makers of the past several weeks to allow Flat Rock Speedway's UAW Local 3000/Glass Unlimited Scout and Autograph Night to take place.  Race fans were treated to a host of goodies compliments of Flat Rock's ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model, DTS Drive Train Specialist Street Stocks and the ARCA Figure 8 race teams.

A quick, heavy rain shower set in with just 5 cars left to qualify.  The autograph session went off as scheduled and the race card started about 40 minutes late.  Saturday night's feature winners were Ricky Kargel, Tim Moore, Billy Cronce and Robbie Loving.  Walter Krause of Glass Unlimited presented trophies to the winners.

Keith Nelson charged into the lead at the start of the 50 lap ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model feature and led the first 9 laps until Ricky Kargel sped by on the outside.  On lap 21, the yellow came out when Brad Birr spun.  Nelson's fine run ended when he dropped out on the yellow.  That bunched the field and erased Kargel's sizable lead.  2 laps later, Paul Pelletier and Eric Lee tangled, bringing out the next yellow.  Both went to the tail and Ricky pulled away from Dennis Strickland and Justin Schroeder on the re-start.  Ron Allen brought out the red flag on lap 37 when something broke on his car and he slammed the turn 3 wall, ending his night.  mooretimvlfr052210.jpgKargel took off again on the green on his way to the win over Strickland, Schroeder, Joe Hawes and Royce Cornett, who came from 15th to 5th.  Pelletier, Matthew Bullock, Lee, rookie Nick Grodi and Jeff MacZink completed the top ten.  Pelletier set quick time at 11:757 for the 28 car field.  Heat race winners were Lee, MacZink, Donald Burkhart and rookie Jim Alvis captured the heat races.  Rookie Kenny Matthews won the last-chance race.

Tim Moore led start to finish and held off a hard-charging Dan Ford Jr. to claim the top spot in the 25 lap ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock A Main race.  The race was filled with yellows as the extreme humidity made the track slick.   A lap 9 red flag saw Tadek Stadniczuk and Chad Guinn bump, catching Jeff Kurzyniec in the aftermath.  Moore stayed out front as Ford Jr. applied the pressure all the way to the checkered flag.  Jason Shinn was third, Danny Slater fourth and David Kind fifth, followed by Clyde McKee, Mike Jaynes, Darrell Krause, Al Hasenfratz and Chris Hebert.  croncevlfr052210.jpgBilly Cronce picked up his first-ever win in the 15 lap DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock B Main race.  Jimmy Rae was second, James Pankow, Lonnie York, Kyle Metdpenningen, Shonda Harbin, Anthony Camilli, Jimmy Little and Rich Abel trailed.  Heat race winners were Slater, Jaynes, Dennis Randall and York.  The fast qualifier was Ford Jr. for the A cars at 13:420, with Cronce leading the B cars at 14:085.

The finale was the wild 20 lap ARCA Figure 8 feature saw Robbie Loving get by race leader Jerry Lee on lap 10 on his way to victory.  There was plenty of action throughout the contest, as the humidity and the rains made things tough on the Figure 8 track.  lovingvlfr052210.jpgLoving took the flag over Greg Studt, Billy Earley, Jerry Lee Jr., Gary Cronenwett, Dennis Whisman, James Rae, Jeremy Vanderhoof, Anthony Terris and Stephanie Bradley.  Whisman set fast time at 20:957, with Loving and Terris taking the heat race wins.
