Toledo Speedway 50th Anniversary: A Look Back at 1990

1990-VANDERLAAN WINNER IN ROUND 1 OF ROUMELL 900 SERIES

Toledo Speedway held the first leg of the Chuck Roumell 900 Series, thus named based on the previous year's champion. Over 30 late models entered the 100-lap season opener, making for a strong field and a competitive event.

Grand Rapids native Bruce Vanderlaan, who started frequenting Toledo Speedway in the early 1980s, won the series titles in 1987 and 1988, and returned in the familiar Bill McGowan-owned #40. Vanderlaan quickly established that he would contend for the race win and series title again, but at the onset of the race it was ageless wonder Joy Fair taking the lead. Fair, in the trademark school bus yellow #1 Dearborn Crankshaft machine, thrilled the crowd in his 5th decade behind the wheel by leading through lap 50 with Vanderlaan in tow. Misfortune struck Fair at the halfway mark of the event as he spun in another car's oil and hit the wall, ending his fine run. Vanderlaan then cruised home, taking the victory over Roumell, Tim Ice, Dennis Berry and Jerry Cook.

Chuck Hall continued his dominance of the sportsman class, taking the feature over Eric Kanfield and C. Jay Baughan. The figure-8 feature was captured by Ken Rapp ahead of Bedford Lewallen.
